Activities help students learn about Noah and preserving animals

According to the Book of Genesis, at God's command, Noah built an ark. At the time there was no flooding, so everyone around him laughed at such a task--until the great flood came. Ultimately, the story is one of the animals and Noah's family preserved in a huge boat. In the classroom, activities can focus on the adventure and the trust in God.

  1. Make Ark Animals

    • Have students color and cut out an animal pair which were on the ark. Next, have students cut a strip of paper long enough to fit around their heads, plus two inches. It should be wide enough, approximately six inches, to fold lengthwise to make the band more sturdy. After folding, glue it closed. Glue the animal pair chosen to the middle of the band. Size the band to fit the individual students and staple. Students are now Ark animals. Instead of making headbands, have students attach the animals to craft sticks.

    Ark Table

    • Most Sunday School classes sit around a long table. Using imagination, turn the table into Noah's ark. Tell the story of Noah, explaining about the animals entering the ark to be preserved when water flooded the whole earth, as the students sit on the table. Have the students sway as though waves splash against the Ark.

    Mimic the Animals

    • As you tell or read the story of Noah, whenever you mention animals, have students mimic the sounds of the animals they're pretending to be. If the students hold their animals, have them wave the correct animal whenever they mimic one.
