Early Support Monitoring Protocol

Early Support Monitoring Protocol thumbnail
Early support monitoring protocol (ESMP) is a systematic approach to meet the needs of children and babies suffering from a disability.

The Early support monitoring protocol (ESMP) is part of a program introduced in 2003 to England as the Early Support Pilot Programme. The program recognizes that young children with disabilities need to be identified and supported at an early age.

  1. Newborn Services

    • Resources and assistance of the Early Support programs are delivered via Sure Start Children's Centres. The program works to deliver diagnostic resources and support to families of children with disabilities. As part of these services, screening of the hearing of newborn babies is being offered.

    Developmental Journals

    • Another vital monitoring aid for Early Support is the use of developmental journals by families of young children. The journal may celebrate accomplishments in generic format or provide a monitoring protocol for deaf children. Training and support are provided for the child's family.

    Partnership Ingredients

    • Early Support is based on the need to share authority and responsibility. This includes interdepartmental cooperation, sharing power with the parents, using complementary expertise, respect and trust and negotiating and agreeing upon processes and aims.
