Consumer Guide for LCD TVs

Consumer Guide for LCD TVs thumbnail
Make sure to select a television that is right for your needs.

With so many different types of LCD TV's on the market, it is hard to determine which is perfect for your home. Be sure to consider your budget, as well as LCD TV features, before purchasing a flat-screen television.

  1. 1080p and 720p

    • No HD broadcasts are higher resolution than 1080i.
No HD broadcasts are higher resolution than 1080i.

As of 2010, television sets that are 720p are dropping dramatically in price and becoming more rare. A 1080p television set will cost you more than the same model with 720p resolution, but it will perform significantly better with Blu-ray DVD players and other 1080p program sources. If you plan on getting a Blu-ray player, you should probably purchase a 1080p television set.

    LED Backlight TVs

    • An LED LCD TV is just an LCD television that uses LED lighting for the television's back light source. The advantage of LED TV's is that they use less power, create less heat and are supposed to have a longer life than normal LCD televisions. LED back lighting will result in a higher price, and won't necessarily result in better performance or longer television life. It is always important to read several consumer reviews for your specific LCD television.

    Other Considerations

    • There are several other considerations you should explore before purchasing an LCD television. Plasma TVs, for example, offer a lower price, deeper blacks and slightly better color accuracy in some circumstances. Additionally, you will want to consider the inputs your LCD television offers; not all televisions offer HDMI inputs. Finally, be sure to consider whether or not you will wall mount your LCD TV. Most LCD televisions come ready to be mounted with VESA screw inserts, while some others come with televisions stands.
