What Is Pillar Bedding?
Pillar bedding is a technique used to attach the barrel and mechanism of a rifle to its wooden stock. The screws are set into metal tubes, known as pillars, that strengthen the connection.
-
How it Works
-
When a rifle's action attaches directly to the wood of the stock, the shrinkage or expansion of the wood can cause stress, which may throw off accuracy. When you place aluminum pillars over the screws, you can avoid this stress.
Types of Pillar Bedding
-
Three types of pillar bedding are commonly used: recessed pillar bedding, in which the action does not come into contact with the pillar; flush pillar bedding, in which the two touch; and free floating pillar bedding, in which the action rests on the pillars.
-
Pillar Construction
-
Pillars are simply small aluminum tubes. Many pillars have grooves on the outside, to make them hold more effectively, and some taper toward the end that faces the stock, for a tighter hold.
