Lawn mower racing got its start in 1973 in a town in West Sussex, England, as did the British Lawn Mower Racing Association. As the sport gained in popularity it spread to other continents, including the United States and Australia. The Australian Lawn Mower Racing Association was founded in 1988.
Racer Requirements

Drivers must be members of the Australian Lawn Mower Racing Association in order to participate in a race. Typically, members must be 18 years of age. With parental consent, however, after demonstrating that they can safely handle mowers while racing younger competitors may be allowed to race.

Mower Requirements

The lawn mower's cutting blades must be disabled or removed and a cut-off switch must be installed. If a racer falls, this switch automatically turns the engine off. Modified lawn mowers must have some sort of braking mechanism. Other restrictions or requirements involve the lawn mower's length, width, suspension, tires, wheel rims and chassis modifications.
