Civil drawing in AutoCAD refers to the use of AutoCAD for civil engineering design. AutoCAD is computer-aided design software used by various types of architects and engineers including civil engineers, to design various features of a development.

  1. History

    • IBM developed computer-aided drawing in the late 1950 and, since then it has become a primary tool for various types of design. Software company Autodesk created AutoCAD which came out of an older program called Interact. Autodesk has since been expanded into a series for different types of designers; for example, AutoCad Civil 3D for civil engineers.

    • AutoCad Civil 3D has a number of features that make it popular for civil engineering. The program has built in analysis for storm water management, water pipe layout and geographic surfaces and can automatically calculate variables in the design.
