Energy Saving Fluorescent Replacement Lights

Replacing incandescent bulbs with fluorescent lights saves energy.

Fluorescent bulbs have become common in recent years as a way to save on energy and cut back on the electricity bill. Modern improvements in technology have created fluorescent lights that deliver quality of lighting similar or superior to their incandescent lights. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • Incandescent lights are inefficient because of the way they work. In an incandescent light, the electric current heats the filament until it becomes so hot it radiates light in the visible spectrum. This process dissipates a great deal of energy as heat, so it's inherently inefficient. Fluorescent bulbs lose much less energy as heat.

    Features

    • According to the U.S. Department of Energy, fluorescent bulbs use about 75 percent less energy on average. They also last as much as 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

    Considerations

    • Different types of fluorescent bulbs are available. Compact fluorescent lamps come in a variety of sizes and shapes, ranging from spiral bulbs to designs where the tube is encased in a glass globe. Straight tube bulbs are common choices for ceiling lighting fixtures in large indoor rooms where they can provide overhead ambient lighting.
