How do I Change the Brake Light Bulb in a 1997 Volkswagon Jetta?

The brake lights of the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta are an important safety feature that help prevent accidents. If your brake light bulbs go out, you will need to replace them as soon as you can. The 1997 Jetta uses 5008-type bulbs.

  1. Accessing the Bulb

    • The brake light bulb is contained in the tail light assembly of the Jetta. To access the bulb, first open the trunk and rotate the two clamps on the inboard side of the vehicle. This will reveal the tail lamp assembly. Disconnect the electrical connector of the assembly and pull it out of the vehicle.

    Replacing the Bulb

    • The assembly has three bulbs: the turn signal bulb at the top, the backup bulb in the middle, and the brake light bulb at the bottom. Squeeze the tabs on the bottom bulb socket to release it from the assembly. Pull the old bulb out of the assembly and use a clean rag to install the new bulb into the socket. Place the socket back into the assembly, making sure it clicks into place, and place the assembly back into the vehicle. Reattach the electrical connector and rotate the two clamps clockwise to secure it to the vehicle. Close the trunk.

    Warnings

    • Halogen bulbs contain pressurized gases, and if dropped or scratched can explode. Halogen bulbs also are extremely sensitive to dirt and oils from your hands. Do not use your bare hands to install the brake light bulb or you may cause hot-spots to form on the glass surface of the bulb, thus ruining it.
