Welders use AC and DC for different jobs.

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is a done by creating an arc of electricity between a non-consumable electrode and the metal being welded. The arc itself generates the heat for welding. This process can be powered by direct or alternating currents.

  1. Direct Current (DC)

    • TIG welding using a direct current (DC) creates an electrical circuit that flows only one way. This leads to a constant polarity of arc charge. DC is used for welding ferrous metals such as stainless steels.

    Alternating Current

    • TIG welding using an alternating current creates an arc which switches polarity in regular cycles. This polarity switching removes surface oxidation from the weld area. AC is used for welding aluminum.

    Wet Welding

    • DC is also used when TIG welding is performed underwater, or wet welding. In wet welding, using AC can be dangerous as well as ineffective.
