Chevy Straight Six Performance

An engine that has a straight configuration is an engine that has all of its cylinders in an unbroken row. This configuration is also referred to as inline and is only used in four and six cylinder engines. Chevy produced its first straight six in the late 1920s and recently used one in the 2009 Trailblazer.

  1. HP and Torque

    • The Chevy straight six engine is capable of producing a maximum of 285 horsepower when it is operating at 6,000 revolutions per minute (rpm). The peak torque rating of this engine is 276 foot-lbs. at 4,600 rpm.

    Redline and Fuel Injection

    • This engine will redline, or top out, at 5,000 rpm. The combustion mixture, which allows the engine to perform, is injected into the cylinders electronically in a sequential pattern. This mixture reaches the cylinders through one of the 12 intake valves that are controlled by the double overhead camshaft.

    Compression Ratio and Measurements

    • The Chevy straight six's compression ratio is 10.3 to 1, and the cylinder bore has a diameter of 3.66 inches. The stroke piston moves a total of 4.01 inches inside of the cylinder bore.
