Speed Test for Linux DSL
Speed tests allow users of the Linux operating system to identify how quickly their Internet, including DSL service, can download and upload data. It enables users to determine if their connection is performing slowly -- and why.
-
Types
-
Linux and users of other operating systems can log onto one of many available speed-checking websites to test the speed of their connection. These websites typically download a sample file to determine the speed of DSL or other Internet connections. Programs offer graphical and command-line interfaces for Linux users to monitor network traffic, including DSL speeds.
Considerations
-
Speed tests may display the speed of a DSL connection when uploading, downloading or both. Typically, if only one speed displays, it is the download speed that relates to retrieving data from the Internet. Upload speed, or the rate at which the connection transfers data to the Internet, is frequently much lower than download speed and some tests may not show this number.

Warning
-
Speed test services and sites may allow users to choose the server for downloading and uploading test data. The further the server is located from the user, the slower the test results may return.
