Motorcycle Trailer Hitch Information

A hitch on your motorcycle allows you to pull a trailer.

Motorcycles do not offer a lot of cargo space for those wishing to go on a long trip. A hitch on your motorcycle permits you to pull a trailer that can carry your belongings.

Hitch

According to Bike World, a ball hitch can be mounted on the back of most motorcycles. Besides a trailer, you can attach a small pop-up camper, bike rack, luggage rack or cooler carrier to the hitch. Hitches are available for many specific makes and models of motorcycles; they can also be custom made.

Load Capacity

It is important to note that the majority of motorcycles can accommodate a maximum of 500 pounds. Bike World cautions not to overload the trailer.

Safety

A safety chain is also needed to connect the trailer to the hitch. Bike World recommends that you purchase your hitch from the motorcycle dealer if possible in order to be sure that you have the right one.

A hitch can also be attached to a vehicle to pull a trailer that carries your motorcycle. Motorcycle Trailer notes that for safe towing you must know the weight capacity of the towing vehicle, the load capacity of the hitch, the load limit of the trailer and the weight limit of the hitch tongue.
