Drinking responsibly is important for everyone's safety.

There are laws that dictate when you can consume alcohol, when you can serve alcohol with food and when you can pour alcohol as a bartender. In California you must be at least 18 to serve alcohol, even in a limited capacity.

  1. California Regulations

    • The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control dictates the laws regarding age and alcohol rights in California. Its laws are codified under the California ABC Act, California Code Act 4 and its own penalty guidelines, which are published on its website.

    Age to Pour

    • In California you must be 21 years old to consume alcohol or pour alcohol. Prior to 2009 adults 18 and older were allowed to pour alcohol in California, but as of 2010 the age changed to 21.

    Exceptions

    • If you are 18 or older you may sell alcohol in California and you may also serve alcohol in a limited capacity at a restaurant. If you are 17 you may sell alcohol if you are directly supervised by someone 21 years or older.
