Oil-Less Vs. Oil Type Air Compressor

Whether you are cleaning siding, your driveway or the family vehicle, a compressor can give you the pressure to make the job easier. Compressors are also used to power nail guns, drills, impact wrenches and sanders. One decision you must make in purchasing a compressor is between an oil-lubricated or oil-less unit.

Compressor Basics

Reciprocating air compressors use the pumping of pistons to compress the air and create higher pressures. This up and down movement creates friction and heat, necessitating some form of lubricant.

Oil-Lubricated

These compressors, mostly used in industrial applications, require splash lubrication with oil. As the crank rotates, an oil bath lubricates the bearings and cylinders. This can cause oil to get into the air supply, but that is only an issue for highly regulated or technical applications such as the manufacture of semiconductors or in food processing.

Oil-Less

A Teflon lining protects the pump in oil-less compressors. This relatively efficient pump produces air that is totally oil-free. Oil-less pumps are generally less expensive to purchase, but may be more expensive to maintain or repair.
