Front-load washers are at risk for mildew growth.

Front-load washers use less electricity and less water during each load. In addition to these advantages, they do have some downsides, including the risk of developing a musty odor. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cause

    • The musty smell in your front-load washer is coming from mildew. Because they use less water, front-load washers are more likely to leave behind dirt buildup after a load of wash rather than rinsing it away. This dirt gives mildew a place to grow, resulting in a musty smell in your laundry area that can cling to your clothes when you wash them.

    Solution

    • You can get rid of the musty smell by getting rid of the mildew. Add 1/2 cup of bleach to a gallon of water and wash away all visible mildew. While cleaning with bleach, keep the laundry area well ventilated and wear gloves. Afterward, run an empty load in your washer. Use hot water, and add a cup of bleach to it.

    Prevention

    • Prevent the mildew and its odor from coming back by running smaller loads so you do not overload your washer. Some laundry detergents are designed specifically for use in front-load washers; they create fewer suds and wash away residue better, reducing the risk of buildup inside your washer.
