Do Weeping Willows Make Good Firewood?
Weeping willow trees look graceful along a river or lake bank. They can grow quite large; when one has to come down because of storm or age damage, the temptation is to view the tree as a source of several cords of free firewood. Does this Spark an idea?

Low Rating
-
The Colestin Rural Fire District in Tennessee reports willow ratings as low for heating quality, easy for ease of splitting, fair for ease of starting and moderate for spark output.
Well Seasoned
-
While all wood should be seasoned before being used as firewood, it is even more important with a marginal wood such as willow. It should dry for a minimum of six months, but letting it dry for two to three years improves its performance slightly.

Occasional Use
-
Hardwood such as oak and hickory are better to have as firewood, but when free willow is available, it is a bargain that should be considered. It will not heat a whole house quite as well, but it works for an occasional fireplace fire.
