Common Industrial Protocol

Common Industrial Protocol thumbnail
The common industrial protocol communicates with machines on the factory floor.

The common industrial protocol (CIP) is a set of standards for automation in manufacturing. The system particularly focuses on remote control of factory floor machinery and the communications network that aim requires.

  1. Features

    • The definition of CIP is supported and managed by the Open DeviceNet Vendors Association (ODVA). DeviceNet is one of the networking systems based on CIP. The others, also supported by ODVA, are Ethernet/IP, CompoNet and ControlNet.

    Function

    • The common industrial protocol defines a series of messages for communicating with programmable logical controllers (PLCs) and remote terminal units (RTUs). PLCs implement the commands of a central controller on a related piece of machinery. RTUs collect status data and report back on the results of the commands to the PLCs.

    Network

    • In the CIP model, several CIP layers sit on top of networking layers. The Ethernet/IP implementation uses the transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) networking protocol stack between the CIP layers and the Ethernet physical layer. Modbus TCP can also be integrated into this configuration.
