How to Compare TV Types

More than one billion televisions have been sold worldwide.

With hundreds of televisions on the market today, it can seem daunting to decide what is the best fit for one viewer. The best ways to compare televisions and determine which to purchase is to compare screen type, screen size, price and energy efficiency.

  1. LCD Versus Plasma

    • Plasma television pixels rely on plasma cells to work.

Liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma televisions are the two most widely sold types of high definition (HD) televisions. Recent surveys conducted by PC World showed that, overall, plasma televisions delivered better picture quality across several types of video, such as live broadcast, HD television, DVD and BluRay Discs. Typically, LCD televisions cost $50 to $100 less than their plasma counterparts.

    Screen Size

Flat screen televisions range in size from approximately 15 inches to a whopping 82 inches. Consider where the television will be placed in an office or home. Larger televisions are more appropriate for common rooms given the more open space, whereas smaller televisions are suited for bedrooms. Also consider if the television will be mounted or sit on a stand. Ensure the size television purchased will fit where it is placed.

    Television Price

    • Consider the budget before purchasing a TV.
Consider the budget before purchasing a TV.

HD televisions range in price from $100 to $7,000 as of January 2011. Paying the lowest price for an HDTV is not always the best way to go, as lower prices can mean compromises in resolution quality and reliability. Consider carefully how much should be spent. A good rule of thumb is to multiply the screen size by 10, and pay at least that for ensured quality. For example, a 36-inch HDTV should be at lease $360.

    Energy Efficiency

    • Check to see if the television being purchased is approved by Energy Star. Energy Star appliances and electronics are known for using lower amounts of electricity and power while still delivering the same quality. Energy Star products can lower utility bills, and sometimes tax write-offs may apply.
