The imaging drum in a printer transfers toner from the drum to the print medium.

A printer refers to a peripheral device that typically connects to a computer and produces text or graphics on a document. The imaging drum, used in laser printers, plays a key role in this process.

  1. Image

    • The printer imaging drum receives an image sent by a laser in the printer. The imaging drum is coated with selenium, an element with photo-conductive and photovoltaic properties, which causes the drum to react to light.

    Electrostatic Charge

    • An electrostatic charge is sent to the imaging drum, which is removed in sections where the laser light hits it.The sections with no charge attract toner and create an image. Toner sticks, or adheres, to the imaging drum, which is sent to the print medium as it passes through it, enabling a printed image to be transferred to the medium.

    Lifespan

    • Imaging drum lifespans are based upon a set amount of pages that can be printed. Dents, scratches, or other damage to an imaging drum may shorten its lifespan and negatively affect the printed image. Many printer devices indicate when the drum requires replacement with a blinking light or digital message.
