Standards of Genealogy
The National Genealogical Society recommends several standards and guidelines for people who wish to improve their genealogical researching skills. The NGS's standards cover three areas: sound genealogical research, sharing of genealogical information and the use of technology in genealogical research.
-
Research
-
According to the NGS's standards, detail should be of the utmost importance when conducting genealogical research. Ways to achieve this include recording the source of every bit of information gathered, seeking original documents or reproduced versions of them, and carefully and honestly stating the results of your own research.
Sharing Information
-
The NGS suggests that genealogical researchers understand how important it is to share genealogical information. It states the importance of identifying all sources that information is collected from, observing copyrights and refraining from sharing information known to be false or harmful to living members of a family.
-
Technology
-
The NGS advises researchers to learn the capabilities of technological tools used in conducting their research. Researchers should understand that despite the convenience afforded by technology, the principles of genealogical research remain the same.
