1987 Ford 2.0 Liter Information

The Ford Motor Company introduced the 2 liter, inline, four-cylinder engine in its Ford Ranger compact pickup line of trucks in 1983. The 1987 2 liter featured a two-barrel carburetor version. Ford equipped the Ranger with the 2 liter engine from 1983 to 1988.

  1. Specifications

    • The 2 liter Ford engine was almost identical to the 2.3 liter version, but with a smaller bore. The 2 liter featured a single overhead cam and a compression ratio of 9:1. Its bore was 3.52 inches (compared to the 2.3's 3.78 inches) and the stroke was 3.13 inches. The automaker boosted its horsepower (hp) in 1987 from 73 hp in 1986 to 80 hp. Its torque, however, dropped slightly from 107 pound-feet in 1986 to 106 pound-feet in 1987. Torque gives the Ranger its pulling power.

    Transmissions

    • A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic complemented the 2 liter engine. The Ranger was rear wheel drive. The same engine/transmission configuration was available in the Ford Sierra, which was sold in Germany and the Ford Escort.

    Performance

    • The 1987 2 liter inline four uses regular unleaded fuel. It earned a fuel consumption rating of 20 miles per gallon (mpg) in urban driving and 25 mpg highway for a combined 22 mpg.
