Consolidation Testing

Consolidation testing is a procedure used for testing soil. This testing determines the rate and magnitude that soil is consolidated when the soil is restrained laterally.

  1. Description

    • Soil consolidation testing measures the volume of soil as water expels from it. Testing the consolidation of soil is required by most counties for building projects.

    Process

    • A consolidation test is performed by taking a sample of undisturbed soil. The soil is sent to a laboratory for analysis. The soil is then tested in the lab to look for the compressibility characteristics contained in the soil.

    Purpose

    • This testing is typically done for building purposes. When houses and other structures are going to be built on a particular piece of land, a soil consolidation test is performed to test the compressibility of the soil. This aids in understanding whether the soil beneath a proposed structure will be able to sufficiently support the new building over time.
