Signs of a Beetle Infestation
-
The most obvious sign of a beetle infestation in stored food is the presence of the beetles themselves. These small pests will oftentimes spend their whole lives in the kitchen and can be found in cupboards, windowsills, floors and counters. Another common sign is small holes and and tears near the base of paper and cardboard food containers.
Potential Problem Foods
-
Flour, baking mixes, cornmeal and similar pantry items are all extremely susceptible to beetle infestation because of the thin, easy to penetrate bags and boxes. Foods like dried pasta, beans and rice are also susceptible, even when stored in plastic bags. The longer food sits unused in a cupboard or pantry, the bigger the risk of food beetles becomes.

Preventing Infestation

When attempting to rid your cupboards of insects it is imperative that you remove and discard any affected products, as well as check your entire stored food supply for signs of further infestation. Thoroughly clean and disinfect your food storage areas before replacing food. Consider investing in airtight plastic or metal containers for future food storage.
