Will Dutch Iris Bulbs Grow Inside?

Dutch iris plants usually grow outdoors, where they bloom during spring. They also may be grown in an indoor environment, however, where you may force them to bloom even during winter. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Choosing Bulbs

    • Large bulbs with no blemishes produce larger flowers. Dutch iris bulbs specially prepared for indoor care---including a forced bloom---are sometimes available. Tall-stemmed irises generally don't do as well indoors as other varieties.

    Planting

    • The bulb should be placed atop a 1-inch layer of loose potting soil in a 6-inch pot and covered by an additional 4 to 4 1/2 inches of potting soil. The initial watering must be thorough---providing a sufficient amount of water to cause excess moisture to emerge from the drainage holes. Water captured in the saucer beneath the pot must be poured out.

    Maintenance

    • The Dutch iris bulb requires evenly, slightly moist soil and temperatures between 35 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit for the first 12 weeks. It needs no need light during this period. After 12 weeks, it should be moved into indirect sunlight and temperatures between 60 to 65 degrees. The Dutch iris bulb will bloom soon thereafter.
