The Pros & Cons of Flatbed Trucking

The Pros & Cons of Flatbed Trucking thumbnail
Hauling cargo on a flatbed trailer is different from other types of trucking.

Pulling a flatbed trailer is one of the more difficult types of trucking. There seem to be more cons than pros, but what someone else might call a deal breaker might just be what you like about the job.

  1. Pros

    • One of the advantages of pulling a flatbed trailer will probably be appealing to many --- drivers don't unload their cargo by hand. You might be able to pull in to unload rather than having to do much backing. Work is always available and pay is usually $20.00 or more an hour, according to CV Tips, a career advice website.

    Considerations

    • Flatbed truckers need specialized training on handling and securing large loads. The security of the load and the safety of other drivers comes down to the trucker. Load strapping and tarping must be done in all types of weather and is physically demanding. You may be required to maneuver in tight areas to deliver your load.

    Loads

    • You could end up with oversize loads, which could be considered either a pro or a con, depending on your viewpoint. You may be asked to haul hazardous materials. The increased pay may outweigh the extra work and risk.
