  1. Description

    • Liatris spicata is a North American perennial growing from corms (small, flattened bulbs). The skinny flower spikes are 1 to 3 feet tall, blooming from the top of the spike, downward. The foliage is grassy.

    Planting

    • Liatris corms are available in garden centers in late winter and spring. As soon as the soil can be worked, plant in soil amended with compost and bone meal. A light mulch conserves moisture during summer drought.

    Tips

    • Gay feather is also available as a potted perennial in spring. Tired plants can be rejuvenated by dividing the clumps in fall. Once established, liatris is drought-tolerant.
