About Zephirine Drouhin Roses

Background

Zephirine Drouhin was introduced in 1868. It is a "bourbon rose," created as a cultivated variant of a cross between Rosa chinensis and Autumn Damask roses.

Description

Zephirine Drouhin climbs 10 to 12 feet tall and produces clusters of pink, fragrant flowers. Train it to a trellis or central column. The foliage is dark green and there are few thorns; this rose is also known as thornless rose.

Considerations

Zephirine Drouhin is susceptible to rust, blackspots and mildew. On the other hand, it has a pleasant look and aroma and tolerates poor soil and partial shade.

Fun Fact

The American Rose Society classifies roses introduced before 1868 as "heritage roses." Therefore, Zephirine Drouhin missed designation by a year -- but is still a very old rose variety.
