When to Start Growing Green Onions?

Start green onion seeds indoors early to ensure they are ready for harvest.

Scallions, or green onions, are simply immature onions. They grow from seed, transplants or sets. The planting time is based on the seasonal climate as well as the method of planting.

Indoors

Begin growing seeds indoors six weeks before setting outdoors for an additional four weeks. Seeds require 10 weeks of growing time to reach transplanting size.

Outdoors

Plant sets, transplants or seeds directly outdoors in southern states in the fall. In northern climates, plant them three to four weeks before the last frost of the season.

Harvesting

Green onions reach harvest size when they are about 12 inches in height, approximately eight weeks after planting.
