Why Does the Windows XP Repair Install Keep Rebooting?
When you need to repair Windows XP, you have two options. You can either use the Windows XP Repair Console or the Windows XP installation CD that came with your computer.
-
Recovery Console Repair
-
A system failure will cause a prompt to come up on the computer that allows you to enter Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration or the XP Repair Console. Choose the repair option and wait a few minutes for the console to start. The number of Windows installations on the hard drive will appear, which is one in most cases. You must press the number of the Windows installation you want. So, if you only have one Windows Installation, you have to press "1" and then press "Enter." If you only press "Enter" without the number, the computer will continually reboot.
Console Repair Failure
-
At times you may not be able to proceed with a Recovery Console repair, and this will be demonstrated by continual restarts. This can be caused by corrupt files, a virus or configuration problem. When this occurs, you need to use the Windows XP installation CD to conduct the repair but must be careful to avoid losing files.

Windows XP CD Repair
-
Place the installation CD in the CD drive and restart the computer. Press "Enter" to start the installation when prompted on the computer screen. Avoid selecting the option to repair the system using the Recovery Console, as this did not work. Press "Enter" as if you were going to do a clean installation. Windows will look for current Windows installations on the hard drive and give you the repair option. It will prompt you to press the "R" key to repair the installation and thereby keep all of your documents and files.
