Types of Grass in the State of Georgia

Georgia's grass types are as diverse as its culture.

Georgia is in the southeast United States, neighboring Florida, and it is known for its diverse geography, from red clay, sandy beaches, salt marshes, forests and mountains. Due to its diverse geography, a variety of grass types are found in Georgia.

North

In northern areas of Georgia, you can find tall fescue, which is a coarse, fast-growing, low-maintenance grass. This grass type is typical for cooler climates. Kentucky bluegrass is also a northern grass that grows in cool climates. It is a dense grass that varies in light to dark shades of green.

South

In southern Georgia you can find centipede grass, St. Augustine grass, and carpet grass. Carpet grass is a warm-season grass that grows well in wet soil. Centipede grass is much like carpet grass, but it requires less upkeep since it only grows 3 to 5 inches. It grows easily in acidic soil and in sandy areas. St. Augustine grass is also a tropical climate grass that grows well in sandy beaches and lagoons. It is coarse and dark green.

All Areas

In all areas of Georgia you can find bahiagrass, bermuda grass and zoysia grass. Bahiagrass grows well in varied climates and is low-maintenance. This grass has fewer insect and disease problems than most grasses. Bermuda grass grows in a variety of warm climates and adapts well to climate transitions. Zoysia grass is a short, heat-resistant grass.
