South Florida Perennials
The southern Florida area has a semi-tropical climate that allows perennial plants to flourish late into winter. Perennial plants that grow in the south need to be heat tolerant. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Types
-
Some heat-tolerant perennials include blue mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum L.), perfumed spiderlily (Hymenocallis latifolia) and swamp sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius). The blue mistflower is a native plant to the southern U.S. and blossoms in the fall. The perfumed spiderlily is a true lily that flowers during the summer. The swamp sunflower blooms in the fall.
Growing Conditions
-
Perennial flowerbeds need routine weeding. Pruning perennials helps the development of the plant; removing withered leaves and flowers aids in the plants' ability to regenerate. Watering plants during the morning keeps the leaves from scorching under the south Florida afternoon's hot sun, and helps dry excessive moisture from the foliage.
