Different varietals of avocado tree produce fruit at different times of the year. Grafted avocados produce fruit within two years, while avocado trees grown from seed can take up to 15 years to produce fruit. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Guatemalan-Mexican Hybrids

    • The Lula, a Guatemalan-Mexican hybrid, produces fruit in September and October. Avocados do not ripen on the tree. As a result, gardeners can allow the fruit to hang on the tree as long as cooler temperatures last, often as late as January. The Sharwil hybrid, grown primarily in Hawaii, retains a green skin even when ripe and produces fruit in the winter and spring.

    Guatemalan Varieties

    • Gardeners can harvest many Guatemalan varieties, which include the Haas avocado, from January through September. Individual Haas avocado trees often produce a high-quality crop every other year. In Mexico, farmers harvest Haas avocados year-round, with the largest production taking place from October to May.

    West Indian

    • West Indian avocados usually produce fruit during the late summer months. Each varietal produces ripe fruit at a different time. Butler avocados fruit in August and September, while Ruchle fruits in July.
