SAE Automotive Standards

SAE International is a worldwide association of engineers and technical experts in the automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicle industries. SAE works with its member organizations in the development of voluntary consensus standards.

  1. Standard Status

    • The SAE website divides its published standards into two broad categories -- "current" and "all." "Current" standards are those that are currently in effect, whereas "all" includes the current standards as well as standards that have been cancelled or are under review.

    Automotive Standards

    • SAE automotive standards involve a wide range of topics. As of 2010, there are 20 topics in all. A short list of the topics includes bodies and structures, human factors and ergonomics, materials, safety, transportation systems, parts and components and environment.

    Purchase Information

    • These standards are available for purchase on the SAE website. As of December 2010, the listed price for each standard is $63. Members receive a 10 percent, 15 percent or 20 percent discount depending on member status. The standards may be downloaded, mail-delivered or faxed.
