The early versions of the Audi 90 featured a 2.3-liter inline-five engine with 130 horsepower. The bore and stroke were measured at 3.25 inches and 3.4 inches. The final versions of the 90 had 2.8-liter, V-6 engines that produced 172 horsepower. They had a bore and stroke of 3.19 inches and 3.56 inches.

The two-wheel drive models with automatic transmissions got 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, while their manual counterparts got 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The 1995 90 got 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway with four-wheel drive. The 1995 two-wheel drive models got about 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
