Hinoki Cypress Problems

Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is a low-growing evergreen introduced from Japan around 1860. The slow-growing plant is commonly grown in temperate climates as a specimen plant or bonsai. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Location

    • The hinoki cypress requires a bright, sunny location. If grown in a shady location, the low and inner branches of the plant will typically brown and die. Cold winds may also dry out foliage.

    Rot

    • Like other cypress species, the hinoki cypress is susceptible to root rot, a dire fungal condition caused by over watering. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mist the foliage of indoor plants, allowing plants to dry fully before spraying again.

    Pests

    • Hinoki cypress is susceptible to a variety of pests, notably juniper scale, spruce mites and bagworm. Use an organic pesticide to treat pest infestations, and remove dead or heavily infested foliage.
