A MiniDisc lets you play and record audio files anywhere.

A MiniDisc (MD) looks like a regular CD but has a smaller size. Its portable recorder device lets you play and record audio files anywhere. Beside audio files, an MD can also store data files.

  1. History

    • Sony announced a new digital medium called MD in 1991. It recorded and played consumer audio files at a slightly lower quality than CD. In 1993, Sony launched MD Data, which stored computer data. Since then, MD's compression technology has improved and made the audio quality almost the same as CD.

    Types

    • Pre-mastered MDs have the same operation functions as CDs. Recordable MDs usually come empty and you can record files on them repeatedly. The two look different because the recordable MDs come in square cartridges, similar to floppy disc cases.

    Technology

    • Recordable MDs use a different recording technology compared to recordable CDs. MDs employ magneto-optical recording on cartridge-enclosed 64 millimeter (mm) discs, while CDs use optical recording on unenclosed 300 mm or 80 mm disc.
