Lucky bamboo plants are actually members of the Dracaena genus.

The Dracaena genus contains about 40 species of succulent shrubs and trees, native mostly to Africa. It includes lucky bamboo and other common ornamental houseplants, as well as Dracaena draco, the source of dragon's blood resin. Indoor Dracaenas can tolerate low-light conditions and are used in homes and offices. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Appearance

    • Dracaenas tend to have attractive, variagated foliage in green, white or even pink. Plants may grow between 2 and 10 feet high, depending on the species and cultivar. Upright types grow to be about 2 feet across.

    Conditions

    • These plants prefer bright, indirect light, and may develop elongated stems and light colors from long exposure to low-light conditions. Dracaenas should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings. Ideally, water these plants with warm water to prevent shock. Keep Dracaena species at temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and slightly cooler at night. Mist plant leaves occasionally.

    Propagation

    • Clemson University recommends propagating Dracaena from stem cuttings or basal shoots in the spring or late summer. Most species will root readily and produce new plants in short order.
