Issues

Water-based products applied to bare wood can cause the grain in the wood to be raised. To avoid this, first apply an alcohol-based sealer. Alcohol does not raise the wood grain. Be sure the product is a dewaxed shellac. Water-based polyurethane products adhere well to the dewaxed product, according to the professionals at Hardwood Installer.
