About Technical Surveillance & Counter Surveillance

Technical Surveillance & Counter Surveillance (TSCM) is the process of electronic surveillance or bug sweeping. The Department of Defense defines TSCM as a service accomplished by qualified military or federal employees who have completed TSCM courses and certification. This service is to detect the presence of bugs or other technical shadowing devices in the event of a hostile breach, which may occur in a military and federal facility.

  1. Electronic Surveillance

    • Electronic surveillance is the observation of an individual or his property with the use of advanced electronic listening or video recording devices.

    Bug Sweep

    • Bug sweeps can help protect an individual's privacy. Trained military or federal investigators accomplish bug sweep services for the government. Trained private investigators and TSCM agents with commercial security firms provide these services to banks, large corporations and research facilities where corporate espionage could take place.

    Counter Surveillance Service

    • Professional investigators are also involved in performing audits on electronic surveillance systems. Investigators perform counter-surveillance services to detect security problems within a company's security program. Such services will provide evidence of a technical security breach and who is responsible.

    Types of TSCM

    • There are various forms of TSCM such as surveys, facility inspections, wiretap detection and on-site monitoring.

    TSCM Expert

    • A TSCM expert is a qualified private investigator with bug sweeping experience. The investigator has a Private Investigator (PI) license and has taken TSCM courses to become certified as a TSCM professional.
