ISO 14000 standards enable organizations to control costs related to waste management.

ISO 14000 is a management tool that constitutes several standards that focus on environmental management systems. The first of the two standards stipulate the requirement for an EMS and the general EMS guidelines and the second one covers specific environmental aspects.

  1. Importance of the Standards

    • ISO 14000 standards enable organizations to control costs related to waste management, document the management's commitment to governance and reduce energy consumption. The standards also enable them to control the impact of the organization's activities on the environment.

    Application of the Standards

    • All organizations are required to adhere to ISO 14000 standards regardless of their size or nature of business. Their geographical location or the social or cultural conditions in which they operate also does not matter.

    Absence of the Standards

    • Organizations that do not adhere to ISO 14000 standards often suffer from high energy consumption and material waste. They are also prone to poor public image and may incur losses from paying fines for breaching environmental and other rules in their operations.
