Laws for Shooting Rifles in North Dakota thumbnail
Rifles are legal in North Dakota.

North Dakota is a state with relatively non-intrusive firearm legislation. However, it is still imperative to know state gun laws before buying, carrying or using a weapon. Rifles and handguns are subject to different laws.

  1. Carrying a Rifle

    • A weapon is considered concealed if it is not immediately discernible. If you want to carry your rifle in your trunk or under your seat, you will need a concealed carry license. Remember that short-barreled weapons, such as sawed-off shotguns or rifles, are prohibited in North Dakota.

    Within City Limits

    • You may not fire a rifle or any other firearm within city limits unless you are a police officer, a private citizen acting in self defense or inside a shooting gallery or range. Firing a weapon outside of of these circumstances, within city limits, is a Class B misdemeanor.

    Outside of City Limits

    • There are no statewide restrictions on firing a rifle outside city limits. County laws may still impose their own restrictions, however. Additionally, local township law can place restrictions on how a weapon may be carried.
