State Retirement & GS Employment
Retirement benefits are handled separately for federal government and state employees.
-
GS Employment
-
The general schedule (GS) scale is used to identify pay levels among federal government employees. All federal employees work at a GS level indicating their pay grade and status in the employment hierarchy. This system is designed to keep pay scales equitable across different federal departments.
State Employees
-
State employees are directly employed by the state itself. Every state sets its own pay scales for its employees.
-
State Retirement
-
Retirement benefits, namely pensions, are a widely coveted benefit of government work. Each state runs its own retirement system to fund its pension plans. For example, in California the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) handles the money and investments to pay for public pensions.
