The Care of Flowering Almond Bushes

The dwarf flowering almond (Prunus glandulosa), which is native to Japan and China, grows to a height of 5 feet and a width of 4 feet. A deciduous shrub, it produces white or pink flowers in April, just before foliage emerges. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Planting Conditions

    • The flowering almond shrub prefers a planting location in full sunlight or partial shade, with organically rich, moist but well-draining soil. Once established, however, the shrub is moderately drought-tolerant.

    Pruning and Growth

    • A severe pruning following flowering encourages new growth and a better display of blossoms the following year. The shrub produces red or black-red berries that measure approximately 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch in diameter. It grows at a rate of 12 to 18 inches per year.

    Vulnerabilities

    • A short-lived shrub, the flowering almond rarely lives past 10 years of age, according to the Missouri Botanical Garden. The shrub is susceptible to fire blight, cankers, honey fungus, root rot and leaf disorders. It may also require treatment for aphids, mites, caterpillars, borers and scale insects.
