What Is Ammeter Resistance?

What Is Ammeter Resistance? thumbnail
An ammeter measures electric current.

An ammeter is a device which is used to detect and measure the amount of electric current flowing through it. The device has zero internal resistance, since it drops very little voltage as electrons flow through it.

  1. Ammeters' Design

    • An ammeter measures electric current using a voltmeter which is connected across an internal low-resistance current shunt.

    Current Shunt

    • The low-resistance internal shunt conducts current directly back to the circuit and this low resistance develops voltage that is enough to cause movement in the measuring gauge of the sensitive voltmeter.

    Conversion of Voltage to Current

    • The voltage present across the shunt is directly proportional to its constant resistance and current in agreement with Ohm's Law (V = I x R).

    The Shunt Resistance

    • If a 10-ampere current produces 10 millivolts in the shunt, the resistance produced is equivalent to 0.001 Ohm.
