Hardware and software vendors providing barcode hardware and software usually create their own training courses which differ in time frames according to each vendor.

Barcode training features consist of understanding how hand-held terminals interface with a computer unit or workstation, how barcodes are translated into numbers and database management. Devices such as, hand-held terminals and scanners are used in a training session.

Vendors typically have training facilities which simulate a working environment or personnel can conduct on-site training according to the clients wishes. Most vendors conduct continuing seminars or offer on-site training to their clients which is determined by a service contract. Prices for training may be predetermined in the service contract.

Training also helps individuals troubleshoot problems when barcodes appear not to work or scanners are having trouble reading optical character reader (OCR) labels.
