Free Flow Cytometry Analysis

Flow cytometry is a powerful technique to study and count cells or other particles from biological specimens and samples. Analyzing flow cytometry typically involves the use of computer software; some academic labs have released software of this kind that you can use for free.

  1. Features

    • In flow cytometry, cells or particles like chromosomes, are labeled using fluorescent antibodies or other dyes. The cells are then suspended in fluid flowing past a laser beam. The particles scatter the light, while the fluorescent chemicals may absorb it and re-emit it at a longer wavelength. Detectors stationed around the fluid pick up the scattered or emitted light and input this data into the computer for analysis.

    Analysis

    • Flow cytometry data can be plotted on a one- or two-parameter histogram. The former has two axes, the x and y axis, each of which corresponds to one parameter of the data. The latter is essentially a contour diagram --- a little like a topographical map --- that can show correlations between cell count and two other parameters.

    Free Software

    • Some academic labs have released free software for flow cytometry analysis. The Salk Institute, for example, maintains a page where you can download flow cytometry software for different operating systems. A link to this page appears in the Resources section.
