What Is Codec Overrun?
A common method of moving data across the Web is to make single file that contains a snapshot of a CD or DVD. On the Mac, these images are called DMG files and must be handled with care.
-
DMG as a Format
-
Mac computers since OS X have utilized the DMG, or disk image, format as a replacement for the .IMG format. The utility included in OS X and later automatically mounts these images when the file is accessed. DMG files are not intended for the Windows operating system and will not run even if a compatible utility is utilized to open or extract them.
Codec Overrun Errors
-
Codec overrunoccurs when the coding/decoding algorithm in the Mac DMG-reading utility is unable to process the data in the DMG file. These errors can be caused by a number of issues, almost all of them related to the way the DMG file has been moved to your computer.
-
Remedying Codec Overrun
-
The only reliable solution for fixing codec overrun is to disable any download managers and download the DMG file again. If it continues to be a problem, the problem may be remedied by turning off the SPI firewall, although this only seems to be an issue with NetGear routers. Sometimes clicking "Ignore" when the error shows up will allow the disk image to mount properly anyway, but there is likely an issue somewhere on the disk that may or may not cause problems later on.
