Does the Air Filter in a PT Cruiser Improve the MPG?
A car's air filter prevents airborne contaminants from entering the engine. It is usually made of paper and is housed in a plastic casing at the center of the top of the engine, though in some cases it is set off to the side.

High-Performance Air Filters
-
Some companies claim that their high-performance air filters can improve gas mileage. High-performance filters are often made of cotton or a cotton-blend. They are usually washable and reusable, and sometimes come with a lifetime warranty. However, research by the U.S. Department of Energy and "Consumer Reports" suggest that improved air flow does not improve gas mileage in vehicles like the PT Cruiser.
Department of Energy Report
-
A 2009 report by the U.S. Department of Energy suggests that replacing the air filters on vehicles with fuel-injected, computer-controlled engines, such as those in the PT Cruiser, will improve performance, such as acceleration time, but not gas mileage. The researches tested cars with clogged or restricted air filters and concluded that "despite the filter restrictions, however, no significant changes in fuel economy were observed."

"Consumer Reports" Testing
-
A 2008 "Los Angeles Times" article titled "Myths on Raising Gas Mileage" reported the findings of a "Consumer Reports" test similar to the one conducted by the Department of Energy. The researchers for "Consumer Reports" found no significant difference in the gas mileage for cars with clean or dirty filters. The gas mileage actually improved in one vehicle while its air filter was covered in duct tape.
