Forensic Accident Investigation Training

Forensic accident investigators examine various types of accidents while applying scientific knowledge to provide expert testimony to judges, attorneys and juries. Training programs are specific to the law and area of specialization.

Core courses include civil and criminal law, expert witness training, communication skills and accident reconstruction. Other courses vary depending on the area of concentration. A person pursuing a certificate in vehicular accident investigation will take classes specific to causes, determining fault and auto components. Training programs are available online and in person.

Colleges and universities offer certificates, associate, bachelor's and master's degrees in forensic accident investigation. Certificate programs take about nine months to complete, while degree-granting programs take between two and five years for completion. Cost varies depending on the type of institution, with private ones costing the most.

Employment Opportunities

Law enforcement agencies, insurance companies, attorneys, hospitals and consultants employ forensic accident investigators. The amount of work available greatly depends on the location. An investigator may work full-time in metropolitan areas and on a contractual basis in rural areas.
