Containers Good for Planting Trees

Containers Good for Planting Trees thumbnail
Trees can grow in almost any type of container.

Trees require sizable containers so their roots can grow and seek out nutrients needed to survive and thrive. Almost any type of container can be used as long as it's wide and deep enough for the tree to grow. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Considerations

    • Before planting a tree in a container, take the species' mature size into consideration. Smaller trees work better in containers since the tree's height and width are proportional to the size of the root system. The container will help restrict root growth.

    Size

    • Trees that will reach at least 5 feet tall require containers that hold at least 15 gallons of soil. For trees up to 10 feet tall, a Versailles planter will allow for the removal of one of the sides to add more soil without removing the tree. The Versailles planter requires several people to move it, though.

    Types

    • Clay pots offer stability in windy areas, but they are heavy. If you plan to move the tree around, keep the container on a dolly for easier transportation. Plastic pots offer lightweight solutions, but they heat up quickly if kept in the sun.
